چکیده

We have detected the synchronous enhancement of Ca II H & K emission with the short-period planetary orbit in HD 179949. High-resolution spectra taken on three observing runs extending more than a year show the enhancement coincides with φ ∼ 0 (the sub-planetary point) of the 3.093-day orbit with the effect persisting for more than 100 orbits. The synchronous enhancement is consistent with planet-induced chromospheric heating by magnetic rather than tidal interaction. Something which can only be confirmed by further observations. Independent observations are needed to determine whether the stellar rotation is sychronous with the planet's orbit. Of the five 51 Peg-type systems monitored, HD 179949 shows the greatest chromospheric H & K activity. Three others show significant nightly variations but the lack of any phase coherence prevents us saying whether the activity is induced by the planet. Our two standards, τ Ceti and the Sun, show no such nightly variations.

Exoplanet-Induced Chromospheric Activity: Realistic Light Curves from Solar-type Magnetic Fields

There is growing observational evidence for some kind of interaction between stars and close-in extrasolar giant planets. Shkolnik et al. reported variability in the chromospheric Ca H and K lines of HD 179949 and υ And that seemed to be phased with the planet’s orbital period, instead of the stellar rotational period. However, the observations also indicate that the chromospheric light curves ...

Hot Jupiters and Hot Spots: the Short- and Long-term Chromospheric Activity on Stars with Giant Planets

Wemonitored the chromospheric activity in the Ca iiH and K lines of 13 solar-type stars (including the Sun): 8 of them over 3 years at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and 5 in a single run at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). A total of 10 of the 13 targets have close planetary companions. All of the stars observed at the CFHT show long-term (months to years) changes in H and K intensit...

The set of radial velocity measurements of the HD 160691 has been recently published by Jones et al. (2002b). It reveals a linear trend that indicates a presence of the second planet in this system. The preliminary double-Keplerian orbital fit to the observations, announced by the discovery team, describes a highly unstable, self-disrupting configuration. Because the observational window of the...
